DUF 2007 “Raices Campesinas”

The theme for DUF 2007 is “Raices Campesinas”. Through class offerings, it is the goal of the festival to bring an awareness and appreciation for the roots from which our cultural expression has flowered. Among the many wonderful workshop offerings, we are very pleased to highlight the following five classes that will explore the rural style of dance and music of Southern Jalisco :

•Jalisco Children (beg) Rudy Figueroa

•Jalisco Youth (beg) Lucina Rodriguez

•Violin (int) Tregar Otton

•Vihuela (int) Eugene Rodriguez

•Guitarron (int) Hugo Arroyo

Folkloric dancing in Mexico is rooted in ritual and social dancing. These classes will focus on the basic steps, body position and thematic elements of Sones Abajeños of the mariachi tradition. The dances are in the style that were traditionally danced on the ranches of Southern Jalisco , as taught by Julian Gonzalez, a Jinete* by profession. Sones will include el Son del Indio and El Guaco.

Movement classes will be introduced at the beginner level and all levels are welcome to participate. Interested Adults may also register for the Youth class.

Music classes are for intermediate level students. Students are asked to bring their own instruments.

DUF 2007 Muertitos Memorial

The DUF 2007 Hospitality Committee invites you to join us in preparing a Muertitos Memorial: Ofrenda Para Nuestros Muertitos. The Ofrenda will be located near the Registration table so that anyone who wishes to add their tribute may do so. DUF 2007 will provide the signage, tables and background décor. Participants will provide one or more of the following: original poem, tribute or testimonial regarding the friend or family member; photo (in preferably non-glass frame); flowers, unlit candles, non-perishable food items, fruit, candy and/or inexpensive memento representing a favorite item. You may also download a “calavera” from our website to customize for your Muertito.

Set-up time will begin on Saturday morning during Registration. The Ofrenda will be taken down at the conclusion of the Recital on Sunday.

“Bailaron mucho en tierra y suelo . . .

Lo siguen haciendo alla en el cielo!”

We hope that you will join us to honor and remember Danzantes who are no longer with us in body, but certainly in spirit. For more information, write to Danzantes@aol.com or call Cruzita Ramos at (661) 345-5842.
